Tim Gunn is best known for Project Runway on Bravo (now moving to Lifetime), and has his own weekly show that tells viewers what to wear and what NOT to wear. He writes a humorous, witty and informational Guide to Quality, Taste & Style. Basically, he encourages fashionistas like us to forgo the trends and go for what works. Maybe that faux zebra blazer wasn’t the best idea, nor those designer jeans that were on sale that were one size too small. If the sleeves seem a bit short, they probably are. He also stresses the need for balance, budget, and a clear head when shopping. Here is a list of key essentials he says every woman must have in her closet:

The Trench Coat They range from Burberry’s $1,200 coat to H&M’s $60 coat, but find one that suits your fashion and is warm enough to carry you from early spring to late fall.

The Sweat Suit Alternative Those Juicy Couture Velour sets may be comfortable, but make you look like you are going to take a nap or go to the gym. Find a cashmere cardigan to put over your white tank top and pair them with capris.

Shoes One dressy pair of boots, one casual pair of boots, flats that flatter, and a killer hot pair of evening heels.

The Fitted Top You need an assortment of tops that fit you well and you can throw on for any occasion. Whether it’s a thin cashmere pullover or a white tank top, have them easily accessible for comfort and fashion.

The Shapely Jacket You definitely need something to throw over your fitted tops that fit you well and do not smother your frame. Make sure they give your shoulders room to move and do not bust at the… well, bust.

Signature Jewelry Find a classic ring or charm necklace that you are in love with and have that as your signature piece. It may be fun to wear all the latest new trends, but a signature piece, no matter what the price, will be with you for years and years.

The Right Undergarments Basically, your underwear’s purpose is to STAY unnoticed, so avoid panty lines and colors/tones that show through.

New, Trendy, & Cheap Item This is where you hit up H&M for that zebra blazer and not regret it six months later. Indulge in small things and get it out of your system.

Denim You only need one pair to dress up and another pair that dresses you down. And purchase denim that FITS. Avoid the bulges and camel toes, and just size up. Remove the size tag if you need to feel better.

Bags My area of weakness. Tim Gunn suggests one workhorse bag, one summer bag, and an evening bag as the staples. What do I do if I have, oh, five of each? I’ll tell you what: I’m going to enjoy them.

Scarves There are the huge pashmina scarves that work as wraps, and there are the lovely silk scarves that you throw on right when you rush out the door for an instant polished look.

Perfume Choose one or two that suits you and that’s all you need. I hardly wear any fragrance, but my favorite is Chanel No. 5 Elixir.
