Since about two years ago, I have been shopping for organic produce at either Trader Joe’s or at local produce markets. The increased use of pesticides for basic fruit and vegetables due to the high demand led me to be more conscious of what I consume and whom I support through my grocery shopping. I started going to farmers’ markets sporadically, and I found them to be a bit too disorganized and especially crowded. Since then, farmers’ markets have blossomed and are available at a regular basis. Local Harvest is an amazing website that helps you find farmers’ markets in your community. The website also allows you to purchase organic foods, flowers and products directly from the website, along with a forum, blog, and newsletter.
The best part about Local Harvest is the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), where you can buy into a share of a local farm and the farm then delivers weekly or monthly baskets of their fresh, organic produce to your doorstep. Subscriptions range in prices and can be seasonal, weekly, or monthly payments.
Why is CSA important? You get to help local farmers thrive and get a fair return on their products while contributing to maintaining and establishing regional food production. You also help to preserve small farms by letting the farmers grow their best crops and not having to focus their energy on marketing and finding buyers. Ultimately, you share a sense of responsibility to your community as well as knowing where your food directly comes from. And that gets my seal of approval.
