It’s Unfashionable: No to Fake Goods
Sep 24th, 2008 | By Style Snob | Category: Conscious FashionFakes are everywhere. People purchase fake products with the simple intention of following trends for a fraction of the cost… moral qualms? None really, because after all, don’t luxury brands already make enough money as it is? And who can tell if a wallet is fake anyway? It never really crosses people’s minds that their support of counterfeit goods extends damage beyond just hideous fashion sense. But if consumers became aware of the consequences of their counterfeit purchases….Harper’s Bazaar’s Fakes Are Never In Fashion campaign is betting that consumers will rethink their poor quality Prada’s and LV’s for more sensible (and better looking) alternatives.
From fake designer handbags to knockoff watches and pirated DVDs, the counterfeit market has ballooned into a 600 billion dollar illegal industry. From the moment a counterfeit product is purchased, it propels a demand for more sweatshop child labor and potentially funds drug trafficking and terrorist organizations. On the Fakes Are Never In Fashion website, the magazine giant explains “The Real Deal” behind making counterfeit products. Regarding the Harper’s Bazaar’s effort in the last four years to combat counterfeit goods, Senior VP Valerie Salembier, says, “What we can do and what we are anxious to continue doing is educate consumers about where the money goes, and it’s working!”
Hopefully as consumers become aware of the behind-the-scenes repercussions of purchasing fake goods, they’ll make more conscious decisions about their purchases. Bear in mind that authentic, quality handbags or watches come with a level of craftsmanship that fake products will not live up to…. Why bother wasting $40 on a fake Burberry wallet that will last you three months? Take a stand, say “NO” to fake goods, and send away your old counterfeit items.
