A New Eco-Friendly All Electric Car?
Jul 25th, 2008 | By Green Snob | Category: Sustainable Living
We’ve seen a definite surge in hybrid cars in the trend to be green, but now there’s talk of taking it one step further. According to a recent article in the LA Times, a Norwegian automaker called Think Global already boasts an all electric-powered car that can travel up to 110 miles on a fully-charged battery. The Think City looks very similar to the popular European Smart Car and will be priced below $25,000. That’s reasonable, considering a competitive all electric Roadster produced by California-based Tesla Motors costs $100,000. The only thing catch - Thing City’s not expected to hit the lots until the end of 2009. The car has a max speed of around 65 mph, a range of more than 120 miles in city driving, and comprehensive safety features like ABS and airbags.
But I do have a few concerns. First, what happens when you use up your battery as you’re driving along the 400 mile stretch from Los Angeles to San Francisco? Secondly, will people actually drive the car in Los Angeles’ SUV-congested freeways? To date I’ve yet to see a Smart Car driving around… either I’m not driving enough or all the soccer moms and their Hummers are scaring them away. There is definitely more research and investments put into developing and marketing electric cars due to the rising fuel prices and the greater demand for a more environmentally friendly lifestyle.
If you were looking into purchasing a new car, perhaps a hybrid or an electric car may be the best choice. If you were not looking, then don’t start looking for a new eco-friendly car just because it’s the latest fad. There are various factors in making a decision about purchasing a new vehicle: how often you drive, whether you have family to tote around, and the conditions in which you drive in (rain, snow, etc.). While our culture begins to get excited about electric cars, it’s still going to be a while before it becomes a part of mainstream lifestyles. Always do your research and look over your needs before you buy.
